During your internship at Voortman, you'll work in the software department responsible for developing the software that runs on our machines. Using our own platform, VACAM, we create powerful solutions. You'll contribute to advanced technologies that control our machines and enhance efficient steel processing.

What are you going to do?

Currently, the operator is fully responsible for loading the correct required material on the infeed of the production line in the order they have been announced in our software (VACAM). To move a step further with automation, and not force that the loaded material must have exactly the same order as announced in VACAM, we can automate this.

The goal of this assignment is to develop a system capable of automatically detecting and identifying the materials loaded onto the infeed section of a production line. By doing so, the system will match the detected material with the production orders scheduled in VACAM, thus eliminating the need for the operator to follow a strict loading sequence. This improvement will contribute to more flexible and autonomous production processes, reducing human errors and increasing the overall efficiency of the production line, especially in overnight scenarios.

Research:

  • Investigate suitable techniques for recognizing material types and geometries. This may involve researching sensor technologies such as cameras, LiDAR, or other image acquisition systems.
  • Design and develop an algorithm that processes the collected data to recognize material dimensions and match them to the announced orders in VACAM.
  • Explore ways to integrate the image recognition system with the existing VACAM software for decision-making in the production process.

Deliverables:

A prototype system that can be tested in a simulated production environment. The prototype should be able to handle both the "happy path" (ideal conditions) and worst-case scenarios (e.g., incorrect materials loaded or materials with varying dimensions).

We offer

  • An allowance of €600,- gross per month;
  • A travel allowance from 15 km and max. 30 km one way;
  • High-quality equipment and materials that you need to do your job well;
  • Whether you are a graduate or an intern; you are an integral part of our team. We think that's very important;
  • A very instructive internship or graduation period at our innovative organization;
  • All freedom and responsibility to successfully complete your assignment.
