Internship/Thesis: Improve the quality of machine data using ML
DIGI-STEEL is a start-up and member of the Voortman Steel Group, which is one of the market leaders for steel machinery. With DIGI-STEEL we introduce the first fully cloud-based software solution for steel processors. It is the next generation steel workshop management software guiding our customer’s factories into the smart industry 4.0 era.
Voortman is currently setting up a platform with which we can extract data from our machines. The project has reached the point where more and more data can be extracted from the machine and sent to the cloud. The data is then used for various purposes (both inside and outside the organization) meaning it is important that the data is correct.
What are you going to do?
To guarantee this, the data must first be validated. We want to make use of ML for the validation part because ML can help us discover anomalies that we would not find ourselves. A good example are the machine statuses: our machines have different statuses that are also sent out, but we need to be sure that the statuses we store in the cloud and use in our applications are really correct. Another example (for which the same holds true) is production output data: we gather a lot of detailed information about the operations that are performed by the machines as well as the products that are being processed.
The following is expected of you for this assignment:
- Collect and prepare the correct data set;
- Research literature for relevant ML models;
- Design, set up and train a suitable ML model;
- Build software that can run the ML model near real-time on incoming data.
